Keeping the borrow side small enough to survive normal volatility

Liquidation risk is mostly a sizing problem before it becomes a price problem. In yield farming, collateral can move quickly, rewards can be uneven, and borrowing costs can change, so a position that looks safe at entry can become fragile after a routine market move. The practical goal is to keep enough headroom that ordinary drawdowns do not force an emergency unwind.

Using a lower borrow ratio also makes the position easier to manage when the market is moving fast. If the collateral loses value while the debt side stays fixed, the collateral ratio deteriorates. If the borrowed asset appreciates, the same thing happens from the other side. Conservative sizing reduces the chance that a short-lived move triggers liquidation before the borrower can rebalance.

Failure mechanism: A borrower runs too close to the protocol liquidation threshold, then collateral declines, debt value rises, or both move against the position before the borrower can react. The protocol liquidates part or all of the position, often during a fast market when slippage and fees are also worse.

Impact: The borrower can lose collateral, forfeit expected yield, and still end up with a weaker net position after liquidation costs. Repeated over-leveraging also makes the strategy path-dependent, meaning one adverse market move can erase many small gains.
