Recent NHI & Identity Security Breaches

Notable breaches and security incidents highlighting the risks of unmanaged non-human identities and AI agents:

Google API Keys Exposure: Gemini AI Turns Public Keys into Data Leak Risk

Google API keys embedded in client-side code were exposed in February 2026, compromising sensitive data linked to the Gemini AI assistant. Nearly 3,000 keys, including some from Google, were found, revealing a critical vulnerability as these keys acted as authentication credentials, allowing unauthorized data access. This incident highlights the necessity for robust key management and security protocols, especially as new technologies redefine the sensitivity of machine identities and credentials. Security professionals must reevaluate how API keys are managed and protected to prevent similar exposures.
