Understanding MATTR

MATTR is a New Zealand company that provides the technology to issue, hold and verify digital credentials such as mobile driver’s licences. Governments, identity verification providers and other organisations use it so people can prove facts about themselves with a tamper-evident credential on their phone, sharing only the details a transaction needs.

The platform covers the full credential lifecycle, from issuance and management through wallets to verification by relying parties, built on open standards for mobile driver’s licences (mDLs) and other personal credentials.

What MATTR Does

Checking who someone is online still often means uploading a photo of a physical card, which is easy to forge and hands over far more data than the check requires. MATTR replaces that with digital credentials that are tamper-evident and phishing-resistant. Holders choose which attributes to share through selective disclosure, and issuers keep control of each credential’s lifecycle, including refresh and revocation. Organisations can add these capabilities to their own services, build their own wallet or verifier, or launch a finished branded app, depending on how much they want to build.

Products

MATTR VII

MATTR VII is the cloud-hosted platform for integrating trust capabilities into an organisation’s own applications. Issuers use it to create and manage credentials, relying parties to verify them, and administrators to run the Digital Trust Service and manage the platform.

MATTR Pi

MATTR Pi is a set of SDKs that give developers secure channels for holding, managing and sharing verifiable information.

Tools to HoldFor teams building a credential wallet
Tools to VerifyFor relying parties that need to check credentials
Selective disclosureSharing individual attributes rather than the whole credential

MATTR GO

MATTR GO is a family of low-code, white-label apps. A government agency or business that needs a branded wallet or verifier can launch one quickly without a mobile development project.

MDL Solutions

MATTR’s mobile driver’s licence offering gives integrators and identity verification providers ready-made workflows for accepting mDLs. Verification works in person and online, including remote verification aligned to ISO/IEC 18013-7, so an mDL can replace a scanned licence in an online sign-up.

How It Works

IssuanceCredentials are issued with the OID4VCI pre-authorised code flow.
HoldingA wallet app built with MATTR’s SDKs claims credentials and presents them when asked.
VerificationA web verifier remotely requests a credential and validates it. For mDLs, MATTR checks each credential’s authenticity and integrity before passing on only the attributes the relying party asked for.
