Sonatype is a software supply chain security company that helps development and security teams control the open source components, containers and AI models that go into their software. Its tools store and proxy those inputs, block malicious packages, flag vulnerable or non-compliant dependencies and produce the SBOMs that regulators and customers now ask for.
The Nexus One Platform ties these jobs together, and the company also runs The Central Repository, better known as Maven Central, which Java developers worldwide pull components from.

What Sonatype Does
Most modern applications are largely assembled from open source, and AI coding assistants now pick dependencies too, often without the checks a human reviewer would apply. Sonatype’s answer is to put one governed source of software inputs in front of developers, CI/CD pipelines and agents, then apply security, licence and architecture policy to everything that passes through it. Nexus One brings artifact management, malware protection, software composition analysis, governance and SBOM reporting into one “single control plane for agentic development”, so the same rules apply whether a person, a pipeline or an AI agent chooses the component.
Products
Sonatype Nexus Repository
An enterprise artifact repository manager where teams keep and proxy packages, containers, AI and ML models and build artefacts, so builds draw from a controlled internal source instead of the public internet. It supports formats including Maven, npm, PyPI, NuGet, Docker, Helm Charts, Cargo, Conda and Hugging Face.
- Community Edition
- Pro, with high availability and SSO/SAML
- Pro+ and Enterprise, with malicious package protection, container protection and configurable policies; Enterprise adds CDN acceleration
Sonatype Firewall
Malicious packages are increasingly planted in public registries. Firewall detects, blocks and quarantines malicious or policy-violating components before they reach repositories, developer machines or agentic builds, which cuts the clean-up work that follows a bad download.
Sonatype Lifecycle
A software composition analysis tool for teams that need to manage vulnerabilities and open source governance across the development lifecycle. Continuous monitoring enforces security, legal and architectural rules on every component, and risk is prioritised by real exposure rather than CVSS score alone. Policy results can raise alerts or fail Jenkins builds.
Sonatype SBOM Manager
For organisations facing SBOM requirements from customers or regulators. SBOM Manager generates SBOMs through APIs, ingests SBOMs from suppliers for licence and regulatory compliance, and lets teams audit, monitor and share them with VEX annotations.
Sonatype Guide
Guide puts Sonatype’s component and vulnerability intelligence in front of developers and AI coding assistants while they write code. It offers dependency guidance and automated remediation, delivering validated pull requests for upgrades and applying security, licence and malware policies wherever developers build. Its MCP Server connects AI coding assistants to Sonatype’s open source intelligence through the Model Context Protocol, so an assistant can check component versions, known vulnerabilities and malicious packages before it suggests a dependency.
How It Works
Nexus Repository sits between public ecosystems and the people and systems that consume components, giving agents the same trusted source of inputs that developers and CI/CD use. Firewall applies policy at that point of entry, and Lifecycle and SBOM Manager work on what is already in use.
| Component | What it does |
|---|---|
| Managed cloud | Nexus Repository runs as a fully managed cloud service. |
| Self-hosted | Customers can run it in their own data centres or cloud infrastructure, with high availability from the Pro edition upward. |
| Air-gapped | A disconnected option serves environments with no internet access. |
