Understanding Swivel Secure

Swivel Secure is a multi-factor authentication provider based in the UK. It helps organisations stop unauthorised access to their applications and data, whether those applications run in the cloud, on premises or on isolated networks with no internet connection.

Its customers are mainly in education, healthcare, finance, government and manufacturing, where sign-in has to work for staff who cannot always use a phone and for systems that cannot reach the internet. The company sells through an international network of partners and resellers.

What Swivel Secure Does

Organisations need sign-in that is strong enough for the risk involved but still usable by everyone, from finance staff to school pupils. Swivel Secure’s approach is to offer a choice of authentication methods on one platform and to adjust how much proof is required according to the risk of the user, device and application. Its distinctive method, PINsafe®, produces a one-time code from the user’s PIN without any app or hardware, which matters where phones are not allowed or not practical.

Products

AuthControl Sentry®

AuthControl Sentry® is the authentication platform. It brings together multi-factor authentication across several factor types, risk-based authentication that raises or lowers the level of proof required, and single sign-on that lets users reach cloud and on-premise applications with one set of credentials, including over OpenID Connect. Users can authenticate with PINsafe®, the mobile app, a hardware token or a FIDO2 passkey, and enrol passkeys through a self-service User Portal. It suits IT teams in government handling anything from citizen data to classified information, and financial institutions protecting customer data, that need one system for every sign-in. The interface is available in English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

PINsafe® And PINpad2

With PINsafe®, the user applies their PIN to pick characters from a random security string, producing a one-time code that is never typed as the PIN itself. PINpad2 is a friendlier version with icon-based PINs, unique strings and backgrounds, expanded character input and an EmojiPad option. In schools it supports phone-free sign-in for staff and picture login for pupils, so younger users can authenticate without typing a password.

Mobile App

The mobile app gives users a phone-based authenticator and holds multiple accounts in the same instance, covering both OATH and Sentry accounts.

How It Works

AuthControl Sentry® is built from Sentry Core, the authentication engine; Sentry SSO, the single sign-on component; the User Portal; and an appliance management interface that can restrict administrator access by IP address. It can be deployed on-premise, in the cloud as a managed service, in a hybrid setup or fully air-gapped. Air-gapped installations receive offline updates, so isolated networks stay current without an internet connection. Sentry SSO federates with applications over OIDC, including Microsoft Entra ID, and Sentry Core sends events to syslog.
