"ISO 42001 Lead Auditor" is not one credential: it is a course title used by many training and personnel certification bodies, each with its own exam, experience rules and renewal terms, so two people with the same title on their CV may hold very different things. This guide explains the standards behind the role (ISO/IEC 42001:2023, ISO/IEC 42006:2025 and ISO 19011), the main scheme types on the market, what the published exam domains and experience levels look like, and how to prepare. It is written for ISO 27001 auditors adding AI, GRC and privacy staff asked to build an AI management system, and managers deciding whether to fund the course. Scheme facts were checked on the bodies' own pages on 24 October 2026; examples from PECB, BSI and DNV are illustrations of scheme types, not a ranking, and fees and rules change, so confirm with the provider before you book.

Key takeaways

  • The standards are stable, the credentials are not uniform. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 (published December 2023) is the AI management system standard; ISO/IEC 42006:2025 (published July 2025) sets requirements for bodies that certify against it. Who issues your lead auditor credential is a separate question.
  • Auditor and implementer are different jobs. The lead auditor track tests planning, conducting, closing and managing audits against ISO/IEC 42001; the lead implementer track tests planning, implementing, measuring and improving an AI management system (AIMS).
  • Passing the exam is not the same as holding the lead grade. In PECB's scheme, for example, the Lead Auditor credential needs five years of professional experience, two of them in AI, and 300 hours of audit activity; without them you hold a provisional grade.
  • Check which audit guidance your course teaches. ISO 19011:2018 was withdrawn on 27 May 2026 and replaced by ISO 19011:2026, so older course material may cite the superseded edition.
  • Renewal carries a cost. PECB lead credentials, for example, need 90 CPD hours per three-year cycle and an annual maintenance fee of US$390 per cycle; other bodies set their own terms.

Who the certification is for

ISO/IEC 42001 sets requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AIMS in organisations that develop, provide or use AI-based products or services. That breadth means the credential appeals to two groups with different day jobs.

BSI, for instance, pitches its four-day lead auditor course at people who want to lead AIMS audits as second or third party auditors, at security and quality professionals, at existing information security auditors expanding their skills, and at consultants. For background on the standard itself, see the ISO/IEC 42001 Guide.

Exam format and domains

Exam format is set by each scheme. The table below uses PECB because it publishes its competency domains for both tracks; treat it as an example of what a structured exam covers, and ask any other provider for its equivalent outline.

#Lead Auditor competency domains (PECB)Lead Implementer competency domains (PECB)
1Fundamental principles and concepts of an AI management systemFundamental principles and concepts of an AIMS
2AI management system requirementsAIMS requirements
3Fundamental audit concepts and principlesPlanning of an AIMS implementation
4Preparing an ISO/IEC 42001 auditImplementation of an AIMS
5Conducting an ISO/IEC 42001 auditMonitoring and measurement of an AIMS
6Closing an ISO/IEC 42001 auditContinual improvement and preparation for an AIMS certification audit
7Managing an ISO/IEC 42001 audit programNone (six domains)
  • Course structure (PECB): both courses run four training days with the certification exam on day 5. The lead auditor page says preparation uses essay-type exercises and multiple-choice quizzes, some scenario based, to mirror the exam; exam duration and type are listed separately in PECB's list of exams, which was not read for this guide.
  • Retakes (PECB): a failed candidate may retake once free of charge within 12 months of the first attempt.
  • Audit method (BSI): learning outcomes cover planning, conducting, reporting and following up an AIMS audit to establish conformity with ISO/IEC 42001, using ISO 19011 and, where appropriate, ISO 17021.
  • What the standard text adds: whichever scheme you choose, the exam is anchored on ISO/IEC 42001 clauses 4 to 10 (context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, improvement) and its Annex A reference controls. You need the standard itself, not only course slides.

Prerequisites and experience

Most courses have no formal entry gate; the experience rules apply to the credential grade. PECB's published grades show the pattern.

PECB gradeProfessional experienceAI experienceAudit hours (LA) / AIMS project hours (LI)
Provisional Auditor / ImplementerNoneNoneNone
Auditor / Implementer2 years1 year200 hours
Lead Auditor / Lead Implementer5 years2 years300 hours
Senior Lead Auditor / Senior Lead Implementer10 years7 years1,000 hours

All PECB grades also need the relevant exam (or an equivalent) and a signed code of ethics. Conversion courses set a different gate: DNV requires a valid lead auditor certificate from a full five-day ISO/IEC 27001 course plus completion of the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Foundation course.

Where auditors work for a certification body, the body's own competence rules apply on top of any personal credential. ISO/IEC 42006:2025 supplements ISO/IEC 17021-1 with AI-specific requirements so that certification bodies have the competence to assess organisations that develop, deploy or offer AI systems. ISO's summary notes AI raises distinct audit challenges in ethics, data quality, risk and transparency. If your goal is third-party audit work, ask the certification bodies you want to work for what they require.

Preparation plan

  1. Weeks 1 to 2, read the standards: buy ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and read clauses 4 to 10 and Annex A end to end. Auditors should also read ISO 19011:2026, the current edition of the audit guidelines, which covers audit principles, audit programme management, conducting audits and auditor competence.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3, build an AI inventory exercise: list five AI systems you know (a chatbot, a coding assistant, a scoring model, an agent with tool access, an embedded SaaS feature) and write the scope statement, risk assessment and impact assessment for each. The AI Impact Assessment Template and AI Risk Assessment Guide give structure.
  3. Week 3, map to frameworks you know: link AIMS requirements to the NIST AI RMF functions and to your ISO 27001 ISMS so you can answer integration questions. See the NIST AI RMF Guide.
  4. Week 4, attend the course: treat the five days as exam practice, not first exposure. Bring questions on evidence: what a conforming AI policy, objective or monitoring record looks like.
  5. Exam week, practise scenario answers: for auditors, write nonconformity statements (requirement, evidence, finding); for implementers, write project plans with owners and dates.
  6. After passing, log evidence: record audit days or AIMS project hours as they happen, signed by a supervisor or client, so you can move from provisional to lead grade without reconstructing history.

Where identity fits in the exam scenarios

AI systems act through identities: service principals, API keys, OAuth grants and agent credentials. An AIMS audit that samples AI systems should test who or what the system runs as, which data it can reach and who approved that access. Candidates from IAM backgrounds have an advantage here. See the Agentic AI Identity Guide and the Identity Governance for AI Agents Guide.

PECB counts work experience (audit work for auditor tracks, implementation and consulting for implementer tracks), training, self-study, seminars and conferences as CPD. Hidden costs to plan for: the standards themselves (ISO/IEC 42001 is a paid document), travel for classroom delivery, and supervisor time to sign off experience logs.

Where it fits on the career path

The credential is a specialisation on top of management system experience, not an entry ticket. A practical sequence for an auditor is: ISO 27001 lead auditor, real audit days, then 42001 (full course or conversion). For an implementer: GRC or privacy role, ISO 27001 or AI governance project work, then 42001 lead implementer. See the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer Guide and the GRC Analyst Career Guide.

Practitioner checklist

  • Decide whether you need audit method (Lead Auditor) or delivery method (Lead Implementer) before comparing providers.
  • Ask each provider: is there an exam, who issues the credential, which grade do I hold on passing, and what are the renewal terms?
  • Confirm the course teaches ISO 19011:2026, not the withdrawn 2018 edition, and references ISO/IEC 42006:2025.
  • Buy and read ISO/IEC 42001:2023 before the course, including Annex A.
  • If you hold an ISO 27001 lead auditor certificate, check whether a conversion route is accepted where you want to work.
  • Start an experience log on day one, with supervisor sign-off, for audit or AIMS project hours.
  • Budget for renewal: CPD hours and any maintenance fee across the full cycle.
  • Practise auditing AI identities and access, which many AI scenarios hinge on.
