Is CVE-2010-2861 (Adobe ColdFusion Directory Traversal) being exploited in the wild?

Yes. CISA added CVE-2010-2861 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue on 25 March 2022, which it does only when there is reliable evidence of active exploitation. CISA lists it as known to be used in ransomware campaigns. A directory traversal vulnerability exists in the administrator console in Adobe ColdFusion which allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files.

How to interpret “exploited in the wild” for CVE-2010-2861

For this CVE, “exploited in the wild” means you should treat it as an active exposure problem, not a theoretical vulnerability. CISA’s KEV listing is the practical signal that exploitation is confirmed often enough to warrant urgent action, and the directory traversal issue in ColdFusion’s administrator console makes arbitrary file read the main concern.

That changes the question from “Is there a bug?” to “Could an attacker still reach it, and what could they read if they do?” For a file-read flaw, exposure is often less about a single crash and more about what sensitive local files, configuration material, or credentials may become available through the admin path.

When triaging this kind of issue, use the KEV catalogue as the operational priority signal and the vendor advisory as the source for the exact remediation path. The relevant Zero-Day and Exploited Vulnerabilities Guide is useful here because the response pattern is the same: confirm exposure, stop the exploit path, then verify what was readable before the fix.

What to check on an exposed ColdFusion instance

Start by confirming whether any ColdFusion administrator interface is reachable from places it should not be, especially across the internet or from untrusted internal segments. If the vulnerable console is exposed, the question is not only whether patching is pending, but whether the file-read path could already have been used to pull configuration files or other sensitive data.

Focus on what the flaw can reveal, not just whether the application still serves pages. Directory traversal bugs often become serious because they bypass intended file boundaries and expose application secrets, server paths, or deployment details that help an attacker move from reconnaissance to deeper access.

For broader vulnerability handling, the Vulnerability Management Guide is the right internal reference because it ties KEV status, prioritisation, exception handling, and verification into one workflow instead of treating the CVE as an isolated ticket.

Why confirmed exploitation changes the response timeline

Once a CVE appears in KEV, the response standard becomes materially stricter than ordinary vulnerability backlog management. You should assume attackers may already know the path, are actively scanning for it, and may be chaining it with other weaknesses or exposed secrets.

In practical terms, this means remediation should be scheduled as an emergency change where possible, not folded into the next routine maintenance window. If patching must wait, compensating controls need to reduce reachability immediately and logging needs to be sufficient to tell whether the traversal path was attempted or used.

The NIST National Vulnerability Database and the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog are the two authoritative places to confirm the record itself, while the FIRST EPSS feed can help you prioritise where this CVE sits relative to other open exposures.

Risk and Threat Considerations

This flaw matters because arbitrary file read in an administrative interface can expose configuration, path, or secret material that supports follow-on compromise. In an exploited-in-the-wild scenario, the real risk is often not the traversal request itself, but what the attacker learns from the files they can reach and how that information supports lateral movement or further access.

Failure mechanism: The vulnerable console accepts path input that lets an attacker escape the intended directory boundary and request files outside the permitted area.

Impact: Sensitive files may be disclosed, including information that can help an attacker authenticate elsewhere, pivot to other systems, or deepen an existing compromise.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

CIS Controls v8, NIST CSF 2.0, NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 and OWASP ASVS set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
CIS Controls v8CIS-7 — Continuous Vulnerability ManagementKEV-listed CVEs require urgent discovery and remediation.
CIS-12 — Network Infrastructure ManagementExposure depends on whether the admin console is reachable from untrusted networks.
Recommendation — Prioritise, remediate, and verify this exploited CVE through continuous vulnerability management. Restrict and segment access to the vulnerable console until remediation is complete.
NIST CSF 2.0ID.RA-01 — Asset vulnerabilities are identified and recordedA KEV-listed CVE requires accurate identification of exposed assets.
PR.PS-01 — Configurations are managed consistent with policiesThe fix depends on hardening and correcting vulnerable application exposure.
DE.CM-01 — Networks and network services are monitoredExploitation in the wild warrants monitoring for traversal attempts and follow-on access.
Recommendation — Identify every exposed ColdFusion asset and record the vulnerable service path. Apply secure configuration and remediation to remove the traversal exposure. Monitor logs and traffic for traversal probing and unusual file-access activity.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5SI-2 — Flaw RemediationThis is a known exploited vulnerability requiring timely remediation.
AC-3 — Access EnforcementThe vulnerability exploits weak boundary enforcement around file access.
Recommendation — Remediate the ColdFusion flaw promptly and verify the fix. Enforce strict access boundaries around administrative file paths.
OWASP ASVSV4 — API and Web Service SecurityThe issue is a web-accessible traversal flaw in an administrator interface.
Recommendation — Test the administrative interface for traversal and access-control bypass paths.

Practitioner Guidance

What to verify: Confirm whether the affected ColdFusion console is reachable from any untrusted network, then verify whether file-access attempts appear in logs around the KEV publication window and any later scan activity. If you cannot prove the system was unreachable, treat it as exposed until proven otherwise.

Decision rule: If the instance is internet-facing or reachable by a broad internal audience, prioritise isolation, emergency remediation, and compromise review before normal change sequencing. If patching must wait, reduce exposure first, then investigate whether readable files included credentials, config files, or other secrets that require rotation.

Practitioner takeaway: For a KEV-listed traversal flaw, remediation is only half the job, because the security decision also depends on whether the vulnerable path was reachable and whether it exposed material that still needs to be reset or hunted for.
