What should teams do when an AI agent sits in the account recovery path?

Current guidance suggests treating that agent as an untrusted workload, not as a recovery authority.

This is especially important because agentic systems do not behave like static service accounts. They can chain tools, follow ambiguous prompts, and make context-dependent decisions that traditional IAM cannot predict. Instead, a dedicated authorization service evaluates identity proofing, relationship context, recent account history, device posture, and escalation risk before any privileged action proceeds.

That means the agent needs no standing permission to recover accounts. It should request a decision, present the minimum necessary context, and receive only a narrow yes or no outcome. For high-risk paths, best practice is evolving toward just-in-time authorization and short-lived credentials rather than reusable secrets.
