AICPA Standards

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated November 3, 2026 Domain: Governance, Ownership & Risk

AICPA Standards is a loose label for professional standards issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. In practice, it can refer to audit, assurance, and attestation standards, so the exact meaning depends on the context and the specific framework or engagement being discussed.

What AICPA Standards Covers

AICPA Standards is not one single fixed rulebook. It is a shorthand for the professional standards issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and in practice it usually points to audit, assurance, or attestation requirements depending on the engagement, report type, and audience.

The term is often used loosely because the AICPA publishes multiple standards and related guidance streams. That means the first practitioner task is to identify which standard set actually governs the work, rather than assuming the label alone tells you the exact requirements.

Why the Term Is Context-Sensitive

Context matters because AICPA standards are applied differently across financial statement audits, service organisation reporting, agreed-upon procedures, and other assurance work. The same shorthand can therefore refer to different professional expectations, evidence thresholds, and reporting outcomes.

That ambiguity is one reason the term appears in governance, vendor assurance, and compliance discussions. A reader should treat it as a family name, not a precise citation, until the specific standard or engagement is identified.

How AICPA Standards Shape Assurance Work

At a high level, AICPA standards define how practitioners plan work, gather evidence, evaluate assertions, and communicate conclusions. They influence what counts as sufficient support, how findings are documented, and how assurance is framed for the intended audience.

For organisations, the practical effect is that AICPA standards help create trust in reported controls, financial information, and other subject matter. For third-party assessments, they also shape how much confidence a customer or regulator can place in the report.

Where the term is being used in a vendor or cloud-security context, the most common downstream issue is assurance over controls rather than day-to-day technical security design. In those cases, the standards matter because they affect how control evidence is tested and how exceptions are described.

Using the Term Correctly in Security and Compliance Contexts

Because “AICPA Standards” is broad, the safest usage is to name the exact framework or report type being discussed, especially when the subject is SOC reporting or a specific attestation engagement. That avoids mixing together professional standards, service organisation criteria, and internal control expectations as if they were interchangeable.

When readers encounter the term in procurement, risk review, or audit readiness work, the key question is usually whether the organisation is asking for evidence of controls, independent assurance over those controls, or a particular attestation outcome. The label alone does not answer that question.

SOC 2 Trust Services Criteria (AICPA) is the most useful starting point when the discussion is really about vendor assurance, because it anchors the term to the specific criteria that many organisations mean in practice.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 and CIS Controls v8 set the technical controls, while SOC 2 (AICPA) and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 define the regulatory obligations.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
SOC 2 (AICPA)CC6.1 — Logical Access Security MeasuresAICPA standards here often point to SOC 2 assurance over control design and operation.
Recommendation — Map the engagement to the relevant Trust Services Criteria and test the controls that support them.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5AU-6 — Audit Review, Analysis, and ReportingAICPA assurance work depends on evidence review and reporting discipline similar to audit controls.
Recommendation — Review, analyse, and report assurance evidence with traceable audit procedures.
ISO/IEC 27001:2022A.5.31 — Legal, statutory, regulatory and contractual requirementsAICPA standards are often used in assurance contexts tied to contractual and compliance obligations.
Recommendation — Identify the contractual and regulatory obligations that define the assurance scope.
CIS Controls v8CIS-7 — Continuous Vulnerability ManagementAssurance reports often depend on demonstrating control operation over vulnerabilities and exceptions.
Recommendation — Maintain evidence that operational controls are monitored and remediate gaps promptly.
