Automatic clustering is a storage and query optimisation feature that reorganises data automatically according to its clustering keys. It keeps related rows together on disk so queries can prune more micro-partitions and scan less data, without manual reclustering jobs.
How automatic clustering works
Automatic clustering is a storage optimisation mechanism that continuously reorganises data around defined clustering keys. The goal is to keep adjacent rows physically closer together so the engine can use the clustering layout to reduce unnecessary scanning.
Unlike manual reclustering, this feature operates in the background. That matters because the physical arrangement of data can improve query pruning without requiring teams to schedule maintenance jobs or tune sort order by hand.
Why automatic clustering improves query performance
The main performance benefit is better pruning of micro-partitions or similar storage units. When related values are stored together, the database can skip more irrelevant data during query execution, which lowers I/O and often reduces cost as well as latency.
The benefit is strongest for workloads that filter repeatedly on the clustering keys. If queries do not align with those keys, the optimisation becomes less useful, and the system may still need to scan more data than expected.
How automatic clustering differs from manual data maintenance
Manual reclustering is a deliberate operational task, while automatic clustering is a managed background capability. That distinction changes ownership: rather than asking teams to constantly reorganise storage, the platform takes on the physical maintenance work after the clustering strategy is defined.
This can reduce administrative overhead, but it does not eliminate the need to choose clustering keys carefully. Poor key selection can limit the effectiveness of the optimisation and may create reorganisation work that does not translate into meaningful query gains.
Where automatic clustering fits in a data platform
Automatic clustering sits in the middle ground between schema design and runtime optimisation. It is not a query rewrite feature, and it is not a security control, but it can materially influence how efficiently analytics engines read large datasets.
It is most valuable when data grows quickly, access patterns are predictable, and repeated filtering benefits from physical locality. In practice, it should be understood as an engine-level optimisation that supports scalable read performance rather than a substitute for good data modelling.
Standards & Framework Alignment
This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.
NIST CSF 2.0 and CIS Controls v8 set the technical controls, while ISO/IEC 27001:2022 defines the regulatory obligations.
| Framework | Control / Reference | Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| NIST CSF 2.0 | PR.PO-01 — Policy | Automatic clustering is a platform optimisation choice that benefits from defined data-handling policy and operational ownership. |
| Recommendation — Define when automatic clustering is enabled and who owns clustering-key decisions. | ||
| CIS Controls v8 | CIS-4 — Secure Configuration of Enterprise Assets and Software | Automatic clustering depends on configuration choices that shape storage behaviour and performance. |
| Recommendation — Standardise the storage configuration that governs automatic clustering behaviour. | ||
| ISO/IEC 27001:2022 | A.8.9 — Configuration Management | Automatic clustering is governed through configuration choices that affect how data is organised and processed. |
| Recommendation — Control changes to clustering settings through managed configuration processes. | ||
