Coreference Resolution

By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 29, 2026 Domain: Foundations & NHI Taxonomy

Coreference resolution is the task of determining which words or phrases refer to the same entity in a piece of text. It links pronouns, names and noun phrases, such as identifying that “she” and “the manager” point to the same person, which helps language systems track meaning across sentences.

What Coreference Resolution Does

Coreference resolution is the step that lets a language system keep track of who or what is being discussed across a passage. It turns separate mentions into a single referential chain so later sentences can be interpreted in context, not in isolation.

This matters because many downstream language tasks, from summarisation to question answering, depend on knowing that different phrases point to the same entity. Without that linkage, a model can miss relationships, duplicate entities, or misread actions and attributes that belong to one subject.

Why It Is Hard for Language Systems

Coreference is difficult because the correct link is often not signalled by a single word. Pronouns, repeated names, titles, descriptions, and implicit references can all point to the same entity, and the right choice may depend on grammar, discourse history, and real-world plausibility.

Ambiguity is common when several entities are mentioned close together. A system must choose between candidates that are all grammatically valid, and small errors can cascade into broader misunderstanding of the text.

Where Coreference Resolution Matters

Coreference resolution improves the quality of many natural language processing pipelines. It helps search, document understanding, summarisation, information extraction, and conversational systems maintain continuity when the same person, object, or event is referred to in different ways.

It is especially useful in long or dense text, where repeated noun phrases would otherwise clutter the output or where a reader expects the system to preserve discourse state. In practice, it acts as a bridge between surface wording and underlying meaning.

For security and governance use cases, better reference tracking can also improve how systems interpret instructions, account narratives, incident reports, or policy text. That makes it easier to attribute actions to the correct entity and avoid confusion when similar names or roles appear in the same passage.

Coreference Resolution and Context Understanding

Coreference resolution is one part of a broader challenge: understanding context over more than one sentence. It works alongside entity recognition, relation extraction, and discourse analysis, but it solves a narrower problem, identifying which mentions belong together rather than deciding what those mentions mean.

That distinction matters. A system can recognise a person, company, or device and still fail to connect later references to it. Coreference resolution fills that gap by maintaining referential consistency, which is essential when language is indirect, compressed, or intentionally concise.
