CVE-2010-2861 (Adobe ColdFusion Directory Traversal)

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 17, 2026 Domain: Threats, Abuse & Incident Response

CVE-2010-2861 is a directory traversal vulnerability in Adobe ColdFusion. CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue on 25 March 2022, which means attackers have used it in real attacks. A directory traversal vulnerability exists in the administrator console in Adobe ColdFusion which allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files.

What the vulnerability means in practice

Directory traversal in a web-facing administrator console means an attacker can manipulate path handling to step outside the intended directory and request files the product should not expose. In a product like Adobe ColdFusion, that can turn one request into access to configuration files, source-adjacent data, or other sensitive filesystem content that helps an attacker map the environment.

Because the primary definition already states that remote attackers can read arbitrary files, the key security issue is not just “file disclosure” in the abstract, but the control failure behind it: user-supplied paths are being trusted inside a privileged administrative surface. That is why traversal bugs are dangerous even when they do not immediately produce code execution.

Why this class of flaw is dangerous

Traversal vulnerabilities often become force multipliers. Once an attacker can read files, they may learn application paths, internal hostnames, secrets embedded in config, framework versions, or backup material that makes later exploitation easier. Even when the first impact appears to be only disclosure, the real outcome can be credential exposure, environment mapping, and faster follow-on compromise.

For an administrator console, the blast radius is higher because the interface usually sits close to management functions and sensitive runtime data. A weakness in that area can undermine the assumption that administrative endpoints are protected simply because they are “not public.” If the console is reachable from the internet or exposed through weak segmentation, the attack surface is immediately more attractive.

For a broader view of how traversal fits into the web attack landscape, Web Application Attacks Guide places directory traversal alongside other input-handling failures that let attackers access data outside the intended boundary.

How organisations check exposure and reduce blast radius

Exposure assessment starts with asset inventory: know which ColdFusion instances exist, where the administrator console is deployed, and whether any instance is internet-accessible or reachable from untrusted networks. Vendor advisories and the CISA KEV catalogue should be used to confirm authoritative patch guidance and prioritisation, rather than relying on the CVE title alone.

When patching is delayed, organisations should constrain access to the console, segment the host, and reduce the usefulness of any file read by tightening filesystem permissions around sensitive configuration and secret material. If the vulnerable service is externally reachable, compensating controls matter because traversal bugs are often easy to probe once public scanning begins.

For vulnerability triage and prioritisation, the Vulnerability Management Guide is a practical reference for using asset scope, KEV status, verification, and remediation tracking to decide what to fix first. The authoritative record for the vulnerability itself remains the NIST National Vulnerability Database and the CVE Program.

Detection, investigation, and post-patch review

Detection should focus on unusual access to administrator paths, repeated traversal patterns in request logs, and requests that appear to probe for files outside normal web content. If the vulnerability may have been exploited, review logs and file access telemetry for indicators of arbitrary file reads, especially against configuration locations and other high-value targets.

After patching, do not assume the absence of an exploit attempt means no compromise occurred. A successful file read can expose secrets that remain valid after the patch, so the post-patch review should include a search for leaked credentials, session material, or service configuration that might have been copied before remediation. If sensitive material was exposed, rotate it on the assumption that it may have been harvested.

When traversal is part of a larger web compromise pattern, it is useful to compare it with known attack families such as path traversal, local file inclusion, and adjacent injection or exposure patterns. That comparison helps investigators distinguish a single blocked attempt from a broader intrusion sequence.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

CIS Controls v8, NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 and OWASP ASVS set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
CIS Controls v8CIS-5 — Account ManagementDirectory traversal exposure is reduced by controlling administrative access paths and scope.
Recommendation — Restrict administrative reachability and remove exposed access paths for vulnerable systems.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5SI-10 — Information Input ValidationTraversal is a failure of validating user-supplied path input before file access.
CM-6 — Configuration SettingsHardening and isolation settings materially limit the impact of an exposed admin console.
Recommendation — Validate and constrain file path input before any filesystem access occurs. Harden application and host settings to minimize exposed file access and administrative reach.
OWASP ASVSV1 — Encoding and SanitizationPath traversal is an input-handling flaw that ASVS addresses through sanitization and encoding controls.
V15 — Secure Coding and ArchitectureThe vulnerability reflects a secure design failure in handling privileged file access paths.
Recommendation — Apply strict input encoding and sanitization controls to block traversal sequences. Design file-access logic so untrusted input cannot change filesystem boundaries.

Practitioner Guidance

What to watch for: Treat any directory traversal finding in an administrative interface as more than a nuisance disclosure issue. If the affected system holds configuration files, keys, session material, or environment details, the flaw can quickly become an access-enabling event rather than a narrow read-only bug.

Practitioner takeaway: Prioritise remediation based on internet exposure and the sensitivity of files the application can reach, not just on the vulnerability label.
