CVE-2015-4068 is a directory traversal vulnerability in Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP). CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue on 25 March 2022, which means attackers have used it in real attacks. Directory traversal vulnerability in Arcserve UDP allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information or cause a denial of service.
What this vulnerability class means for Arcserve UDP
A directory traversal flaw lets an attacker manipulate path handling so the application reaches files or directories outside the intended location. In a product like Arcserve Unified Data Protection, that matters because backup platforms often sit near high-value data, configuration, and recovery assets, so a traversal bug can expose information that should not be readable.
Directory traversal is dangerous even when it does not lead to full code execution. An attacker may still use it to enumerate internal files, harvest configuration details, or probe the host for structure that supports follow-on attacks. For a broader view of how traversal and related web-application weaknesses behave in practice, see Web Application Attacks Guide.
How organisations should assess exposure
Exposure assessment starts with asset inventory: identify every Arcserve UDP instance, where it is deployed, and whether it is reachable from untrusted networks. Because this CVE was added to the CISA KEV catalogue, organisations should treat it as more than a theoretical bug and verify whether the vulnerable product is present in production, backup, administrative, or remote-management paths.
Review vendor advisories and the authoritative CVE record for version and remediation details rather than relying on secondary summaries. The official record at CVE Program should be paired with the entry at NIST National Vulnerability Database when you are confirming identifiers, status, and remediation context.
Organisations that run recurring vulnerability programmes should prioritise KEV-listed issues and validate exposure through authenticated scanning, configuration review, and service reachability checks. NHIMG’s Vulnerability Management Guide is useful for connecting asset scope, KEV prioritisation, and verification into one workflow.
Remediation and compensating controls
The best outcome is prompt remediation using the vendor’s fixed release or documented mitigation path. Until that is possible, reduce exposure by removing unnecessary network access, isolating administrative interfaces, and limiting who can reach the affected service. If the application is exposed externally, treat that as a higher-priority containment problem than an internal-only deployment.
Compensating controls should focus on reducing the chance that traversal can be used to read sensitive files or destabilise the service. File system permissions, segmentation, and strict service-account boundaries can limit the blast radius if the flaw is abused. Where the product is part of a larger security stack, the broader control model in CIS Controls v8 reinforces the need for inventory, secure configuration, and vulnerability management.
Detection and post-exploitation review
Detection should look for unusual requests that attempt to traverse directories, unexpected file reads, and administrative or backup-system access that does not match normal usage patterns. Review web logs, application telemetry, and host activity for repeated path manipulation attempts, error patterns, or access to files that should never be reachable through the Arcserve interface.
If exploitation is suspected, extend review beyond the application itself. Sensitive configuration files, stored credentials, session material, and backup metadata may all be at risk depending on what the traversal path exposed. That is why post-patch review should confirm not only that the software is fixed, but also that no follow-on access occurred before containment.
For a threat-detection lens on how attackers chain discovery, exploitation, and lateral movement after initial access, MITRE ATT&CK Enterprise Matrix remains a useful reference point.
Risk and Threat Considerations
Directory traversal is especially risky in backup and recovery software because these platforms often protect data that is more sensitive than ordinary application content. If an attacker can read configuration, metadata, or internal files, they may gain a foothold for credential theft, deeper reconnaissance, or denial of service against a system the business depends on for recovery.
Failure mechanism: The application accepts unsafely normalised paths and resolves them outside the intended directory boundary, allowing attackers to access files that should remain private.
Impact: The result can be disclosure of sensitive information, service disruption, or secondary compromise if exposed files reveal credentials, configuration secrets, or internal system layout.
Standards & Framework Alignment
This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.
CIS Controls v8 and NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.
| Framework | Control / Reference | Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| CIS Controls v8 | CIS-1 — Inventory and Control of Enterprise Assets | Arcserve UDP exposure depends on knowing where the product is deployed. |
| CIS-7 — Continuous Vulnerability Management | KEV-listed traversal flaws require prioritised detection and remediation. | |
| CIS-12 — Network Infrastructure Management | Segmentation and access restriction reduce exposure to vulnerable backup systems. | |
| Recommendation — Inventory all Arcserve UDP instances and verify their exposure status. Prioritise and remediate the CVE using continuous vulnerability management. Restrict network reachability to the affected Arcserve UDP service. | ||
| NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 | RA-5 — Vulnerability Monitoring and Scanning | This CVE needs validation through scanning and exposure review. |
| SI-2 — Flaw Remediation | A KEV-listed product flaw requires prompt remediation and tracking. | |
| Recommendation — Scan for Arcserve UDP exposure and verify the vulnerable configuration. Apply the vendor fix and track remediation until the flaw is closed. | ||
