CVE-2020-9934 (Apple iOS, iPadOS, and macOS Input Validation)

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 17, 2026 Domain: Cyber Security

CVE-2020-9934 is an input validation vulnerability in Apple iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue on 8 September 2022, which means attackers have used it in real attacks. Apple iOS, iPadOS, and macOS contain an unspecified vulnerability involving input validation which can allow a local attacker to view sensitive user information.

Why this vulnerability class matters

An input validation flaw in a widely deployed operating system is dangerous because untrusted data can reach privileged parsing logic before the system has fully checked whether the input is safe or well formed. In practice, that can turn an ordinary malformed request, file, or message into a path for exposing information that should remain protected.

For a platform vulnerability like this, the security issue is not the name of the bug alone, but the trust boundary it crosses. Apple’s operating systems sit at the centre of device data handling, so a validation failure can affect privacy, application isolation, and the handling of sensitive user state.

How exploitation typically works

Input validation weaknesses are often exploitable when software accepts data from a local user, a crafted file, or another process and then makes security decisions before fully verifying the input structure. That can let an attacker shape the data flow so the vulnerable component reads, interprets, or returns information it should not expose.

Because the primary definition says this issue could allow a local attacker to view sensitive user information, the practical concern is not just crashing a process. The more important question is whether the vulnerable path can reveal private content, session material, protected configuration, or other data that increases the attacker’s foothold.

For readers who want the canonical record format and vulnerability listing, use the CVE Program entry and the NIST National Vulnerability Database rather than relying on secondary summaries.

Checking exposure and prioritising response

The first exposure question is whether your organisation actually runs the affected Apple platforms and whether those systems are reachable by untrusted local users, shared accounts, or attack chains that begin with another compromise. Asset inventory matters because a vulnerability that seems niche on paper can still be material on developer laptops, admin workstations, kiosks, and managed endpoints.

Operational prioritisation should also consider whether the device is internet-facing through remote access tooling, exposed management channels, or user-installed software that broadens the attack surface. For vulnerability triage and remediation sequencing, the Vulnerability Management Guide is the most directly useful NHIMG reference in the supplied pool.

If you need a broader technical lens on how validation defects arise in software, the Secure Coding Guide and the CWE Top 25 Guide explain why missing or inconsistent validation remains such a durable root cause.

Remediation, detection, and post-patch review

When a patch is available, remediation should follow the vendor advisory for the exact affected versions and deployment context. Where immediate patching is delayed, reduce exposure by limiting who can use the affected devices, tightening local access, and removing unnecessary software or workflows that could exercise the vulnerable code path.

Detection is often indirect for input validation flaws because successful exploitation may look like unusual local activity, suspicious process behavior, or unexpected access to data rather than a clean, easily logged exploit signature. After patching, review for signs that the flaw may already have been used to access sensitive content, then treat any exposed information as potentially compromised.

If the impacted data includes user secrets, tokens, or session material, rotate what is necessary and investigate whether the attacker could have moved from information exposure into broader account or device compromise. The State of NHI & AI Agent Breach Report 2026 is relevant here because it shows how exposed credentials and tokens often become the next step after an initial compromise.

Risk and Threat Considerations

This vulnerability matters because even a local attacker can use a validation failure to reach information that should have stayed protected. On Apple endpoints, that can mean privacy exposure, escalation opportunities, or the theft of data that helps an attacker continue the intrusion.

Failure mechanism: The attacker supplies crafted input that passes far enough into the affected parser or handler to trigger unsafe data handling before validation completes, allowing sensitive information to be disclosed.

Impact: The result can be unauthorized viewing of user data, follow-on compromise of accounts or sessions, and a larger post-exploitation footprint than the original local access would otherwise permit.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, CIS Controls v8 and OWASP ASVS set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5SI-10 — Information Input ValidationThis flaw is an input validation failure on Apple platforms.
RA-5 — Vulnerability Monitoring and ScanningCVE exposure depends on knowing where affected Apple systems exist.
SC-7 — Boundary ProtectionLocal exploitation risk rises when trust boundaries are weakly controlled.
Recommendation — Apply SI-10 to validate untrusted input before parsing or use. Use RA-5 to inventory vulnerable Apple assets and track remediation status. Use SC-7 to restrict pathways that let untrusted input reach sensitive services.
CIS Controls v8CIS-7 — Continuous Vulnerability ManagementThis CVE needs prioritisation, remediation, and verification across endpoints.
Recommendation — Use CIS-7 to identify affected Apple assets and accelerate remediation.
OWASP ASVSV15 — Secure Coding and ArchitectureInput validation is a core application-security weakness class.
Recommendation — Use V15 to enforce safe validation and defensive handling of untrusted data.

Practitioner Guidance

Why practitioners should care: Treat this as a device and data exposure issue, not just a software defect. If the vulnerable system holds sensitive personal, corporate, or administrative data, even a local-only flaw can become a meaningful incident driver.

What to watch for: Prioritise devices with broad local access, shared use, or sensitive data roles, then verify whether the vendor’s mitigation has actually been applied and whether any suspicious access occurred before remediation.

Practitioner takeaway: For exploitation-prone platform flaws, patching is necessary but not sufficient, because the real outcome to validate is whether sensitive information was already exposed and needs containment.
