CVE-2026-75650 (Adobe Commerce and Magento Improper Neutralization of Special Elements Used in a Template Engine)

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 17, 2026 Domain: Threats, Abuse & Incident Response

CVE-2026-75650 is an improper neutralization of special elements used in a template engine vulnerability in Adobe Commerce and Magento. CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue on 8 September 2026, which means attackers have used it in real attacks.

What this CVE means for Adobe Commerce and Magento

This vulnerability class matters because template engines turn untrusted input into rendered output. In Adobe Commerce and Magento, improper neutralization can let attacker-controlled template data alter application behaviour, which is why template injection-style flaws are treated as high-risk web application issues.

For a broader view of how template and injection weaknesses fit into application attack surfaces, see the Web Application Attacks Guide, which includes server-side template injection and related input-handling patterns.

Why template engine flaws are dangerous

Template engines are designed to mix code-like syntax with dynamic content. If special elements are not neutralized correctly, an attacker may be able to break out of intended rendering rules, inject logic, or trigger server-side behaviour that was never meant to run on user input.

That makes these flaws especially dangerous in commerce platforms, where rendered content can touch sessions, checkout flows, account data, admin workflows, and integration points. Even when the initial entry point looks like a simple string field, the impact can expand quickly once server-side interpretation is involved.

The underlying weakness aligns closely with the CWE family for injection and neutralisation failures. The CWE Top 25 Guide is useful context for understanding how this kind of root cause maps to common software weakness patterns.

Exposure review and remediation priorities

Because this CVE was placed in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue, organisations should treat it as an exposure that deserves active inventory checking, not passive awareness. Confirm where Adobe Commerce or Magento is deployed, whether any public-facing instance is involved, and whether vendor advisory guidance has been applied to every in-scope environment.

Where patching is delayed, reduce attack surface with compensating controls such as limiting internet exposure, tightening request filtering, constraining template features, and isolating administrative paths. The right priority is to remove the exploit path, not just to note the CVE in a tracker.

For vulnerability triage and remediation sequencing, the Vulnerability Management Guide provides the operational context for asset scope, KEV prioritisation, and verification.

Detection and post-compromise review

Exploitation of a template engine flaw can leave traces that are not obvious in ordinary application logs. Watch for anomalous template syntax in requests, unexpected server-side errors, unexplained changes in rendered output, and follow-on activity that suggests code execution or session abuse.

If exploitation is suspected, review application logs, web tier telemetry, and adjacent identity material such as credentials, tokens, and administrative sessions that may have been exposed or abused after the initial compromise.

Where web exploitation patterns are relevant to your hunt, the Web Application Attacks Guide can help analysts connect the weakness to known injection and template-abuse behaviours.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 and CIS Controls v8 set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
OWASP ASVSV1 — Encoding and SanitizationTemplate neutralization is a core output-encoding and sanitization concern.
V15 — Secure Coding and ArchitectureThe flaw reflects insecure handling of user-controlled data in application design.
Recommendation — Validate template inputs and outputs so special elements cannot alter rendering behaviour. Design server-side templating so untrusted data never reaches executable template contexts.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5SI-10 — Information Input ValidationThe weakness stems from accepting attacker-controlled template elements without proper validation.
SI-3 — Malicious Code ProtectionServer-side template injection can be used to introduce malicious execution paths.
Recommendation — Enforce input validation on all template-fed data before it reaches rendering logic. Inspect and block malicious payload patterns that target server-side rendering logic.
CIS Controls v8CIS-16 — Application Software SecurityThe issue is an application-level weakness in a widely deployed commerce platform.
Recommendation — Remediate the vulnerable application code path and validate the fix in deployed environments.
