Info.Plist

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated November 2, 2026 Domain: Architecture & Implementation

Info.plist is a property list file used by Apple platforms to store an app or bundle’s configuration metadata. It defines values such as identifiers, display names, permissions, launch behaviour and supported capabilities, and is read by the operating system and development tools during installation and execution.

What Info.plist Does in Apple Platforms

Info.plist is the configuration metadata that tells Apple operating systems and tooling how an app or bundle should be identified, launched and presented. Because the file is consumed during installation and execution, it is part of the trust boundary around what the platform believes the bundle is allowed to do and how it should behave.

It is not executable code, but it can materially influence runtime behaviour by declaring properties such as permissions, supported capabilities, document types and launch settings. That makes it a security-relevant artefact wherever application identity, entitlements, or platform prompts depend on declared metadata.

Why Configuration Metadata Matters

Metadata files like Info.plist are easy to overlook because they look administrative rather than security-critical. In practice, they help define the app’s public identity to the platform, and inconsistencies between declared metadata and actual behaviour can create confusion for users, testers and defenders. A misleading name, capability declaration or permission prompt can reduce confidence in what the app is really doing.

For Apple ecosystems, configuration metadata also shapes how the OS evaluates app behaviour at launch, how development tools package the bundle and how the app is treated when installed or updated. That means the file has operational significance even when the underlying logic lives elsewhere in the codebase.

Security Implications of Bundle Metadata

An attacker who can alter bundle metadata may be able to change how an app presents itself, requests permissions or is handled by tooling. In a signed or controlled build pipeline, unexpected changes to Info.plist can be a signal of tampering, supply-chain compromise or misconfiguration rather than just an implementation detail. The surrounding controls should therefore treat it as part of the application’s trusted configuration surface.

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Information Security Management is relevant here because it frames the need to protect configuration assets and verify that security-relevant settings remain controlled across the application lifecycle. NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 Security and Privacy Controls also aligns well because configuration integrity, authorization and system monitoring are all relevant when metadata can affect runtime behaviour.

Validation, Review and Change Control

Info.plist should be reviewed as part of build and release assurance, especially when permissions, identifiers or supported capabilities change. That review is not only about correctness, but about whether the declared metadata matches the intended trust model for the app and the platform prompts it will trigger.

Where the file is generated or modified automatically, the key control question is whether those changes are intentional, traceable and approved. A small metadata edit can have outsized consequences if it affects signing, installation behaviour or user-facing permission flows.

NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 fits as a broader governance lens for identifying, protecting and monitoring configuration assets, while ISO/IEC 27002:2022 Information Security Controls is useful for implementation guidance on secure configuration, access control and change management.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, NIST CSF 2.0 and CIS Controls v8 set the technical controls, while ISO/IEC 27001:2022 defines the regulatory obligations.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
ISO/IEC 27001:2022A.5.15 — Access ControlInfo.plist defines trusted app metadata that should be protected as a controlled configuration asset.
Recommendation — Protect configuration metadata with controlled access and change approval.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5CM-6 — Configuration SettingsInfo.plist is a configuration file whose values affect platform behaviour and should be managed consistently.
Recommendation — Baseline and review bundle metadata settings before release.
NIST CSF 2.0PR.PS-01 — Configuration managementThe term concerns secure configuration of an application bundle and its runtime metadata.
Recommendation — Maintain approved configuration baselines for app metadata files.
CIS Controls v8CIS-4 — Secure Configuration of Enterprise Assets and SoftwareInfo.plist is part of software configuration that should be hardened and tracked for drift.
Recommendation — Standardize and monitor application metadata for unauthorized changes.
