Multi-document question answering is a task where a model must answer a question using several retrieved documents, usually with only some of them containing the needed evidence. It tests whether the model can separate relevant information from distractors and use the right source correctly.
What Multi-Document Question Answering Tests
Multi-document question answering is not just a retrieval task, it tests whether a system can separate signal from distractors, reconcile partial evidence, and avoid copying the wrong source when several documents look plausible. That makes it a useful benchmark for evidence selection, source attribution, and answer grounding.
In practice, the task exposes whether a model can keep track of which document supports which claim, especially when documents overlap, conflict, or contain irrelevant detail. Systems that answer well here are usually better at evidence traceability than systems that rely on a single retrieved passage.
Why Relevant Evidence Is Hard to Isolate
The core challenge is selection, not just comprehension. A model may understand every individual document but still fail if it cannot identify which one contains the decisive fact or if it blends fragments from multiple sources into a confident but unsupported answer.
This is why distractors matter. The benchmark is designed so that some retrieved documents are irrelevant, partially relevant, or misleading in context, which forces the system to rank evidence by usefulness rather than surface similarity.
Source Separation and Answer Grounding
Strong performance depends on preserving the link between an answer and the document that justifies it. That means the system must distinguish corroborating evidence from background material, and it must avoid inventing a merged narrative when the documents support only a narrower conclusion.
Multi-document workflows also reward clear internal reasoning about provenance. If the model cannot explain which source provided which part of the answer, it becomes harder to detect hallucination, source leakage, or overconfident synthesis from weak evidence.
Where the Benchmark Is Most Useful
This task is especially valuable for evaluating retrieval-augmented generation, enterprise search, and any assistant that must answer from a corpus rather than from a single page. It measures whether the system can operate under real information conditions, where the right answer often exists only after filtering noise.
It also reflects a common operational reality: users rarely ask questions that map neatly to one document. The benchmark therefore helps compare systems on robustness, not just on fluent language output.
Standards & Framework Alignment
This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.
OWASP ASVS and NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.
| Framework | Control / Reference | Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| OWASP ASVS | V16 — Security Logging and Error Handling | Source tracing and answer provenance need auditability to show which evidence supported the response. |
| Recommendation — Log evidence selection and answer generation so reviewers can reconstruct which source supported each claim. | ||
| NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 | AU-6 — Audit Record Review, Analysis, and Reporting | Multi-document QA depends on reviewable traces of source use and response generation. |
| SI-10 — Information Input Validation | The task requires rejecting irrelevant or misleading retrieved text before it influences the answer. | |
| Recommendation — Review generation traces to confirm the answer was grounded in the intended documents. Validate retrieved inputs before synthesis so distractor content cannot drive the final response. | ||
