Password Reveal

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 28, 2026 Domain: Authentication, Authorisation & Trust

Password reveal is the display of a hidden password in clear text on screen. It lets a user temporarily unmask masked characters, usually by toggling an eye icon or similar control, so the credential can be checked before submission. The feature changes exposure of a secret, not the secret itself.

Password Reveal as a UX Control

Password reveal is a presentation-layer convenience, not a change to the secret itself. The password remains stored and transmitted as the same credential; only the interface temporarily exposes it so the user can verify entry and avoid avoidable typos.

That distinction matters because reveal behaviour should be treated as a visibility decision, not as authentication logic. A well-designed control changes how the field is displayed, while preserving whatever masking, submission, and validation rules already govern the credential.

Where Password Reveal Fits in Authentication Workflows

Password reveal usually appears alongside sign-in, account creation, password change, and reset flows. It is most useful when a user has typed a long or complex secret and needs to confirm that the entered value matches intent before submission.

In practice, reveal controls are part of the broader usability envelope around authentication. They can reduce entry errors, but they also increase the chance that an onlooker, screen-share participant, or recorded session can read the credential if the field is exposed at the wrong moment.

Design and Security Characteristics

Secure implementation is mostly about scope and timing. The control should be explicit, reversible, and limited to the current session or field view, rather than silently widening exposure or persisting plaintext state beyond the interaction that needs it.

The safest pattern is to reveal only on deliberate user action and to re-mask immediately when that action ends. That keeps the feature aligned with its purpose: helping the user inspect a password without creating a broader disclosure channel than necessary.

Why the Term Matters in Security Reviews

Password reveal sits at the boundary between usability and secret handling. Reviewers often focus on whether the feature exists, but the more important questions are what it reveals, for how long, to whom nearby, and whether any telemetry, browser extensions, or shared-display environments can capture it.

Because the underlying secret is unchanged, password reveal is not a cryptographic weakness by itself. Its security relevance comes from the extra moment of human-readable exposure, which can be enough for shoulder surfing, session recording, or accidental disclosure in collaborative environments.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, OWASP ASVS and NIST SP 800-63 set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5IA-5 — Authenticator ManagementPassword reveal concerns how an authenticator is handled and exposed during use.
Recommendation — Limit reveal exposure and protect authenticator handling so passwords are not needlessly disclosed on screen.
OWASP ASVSV6 — AuthenticationPassword reveal is part of authentication UX and credential entry handling.
Recommendation — Review password-entry flows so reveal controls do not weaken authentication usability or secret protection.
NIST SP 800-63Digital Identity GuidelinesThe topic affects how users enter and confirm memorized secrets during authentication.
Recommendation — Apply digital identity guidance to keep memorized-secret entry clear, usable, and resistant to avoidable disclosure.
