PreferQueryMode

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 29, 2026 Domain: Architecture & Implementation

PreferQueryMode is a PostgreSQL connection option that tells the driver to use the simple query protocol instead of the extended query protocol. It changes how SQL statements are sent and parsed, which can affect parameter binding, statement caching and how multiple commands are handled.

What PreferQueryMode Changes

PreferQueryMode is a PostgreSQL driver option that changes how queries are transmitted and parsed. Instead of using the extended query protocol, the driver uses the simple query protocol, which can alter parameter handling, result parsing, batching behaviour, and statement reuse.

This setting is not a database permission or an application security control by itself. It is a transport and execution-mode choice that can change how safely and predictably an application sends SQL to PostgreSQL, especially when code assumes prepared statements or server-side parameter binding.

Why It Matters for Query Behaviour

The biggest practical difference is that simple query protocol treats SQL more like a text stream, while extended protocol supports structured parsing and parameter binding. That distinction affects whether the driver can separate SQL text from values, how multiple statements are handled, and whether the application benefits from server-side plan reuse.

For developers and operators, this means the same query logic may behave differently under load, across drivers, or after configuration changes. A setting that seems like a compatibility toggle can therefore influence correctness, performance, and the assumptions made by upstream code that expects prepared execution.

Where It Can Cause Operational Surprises

PreferQueryMode can expose hidden assumptions in code paths that rely on driver-managed statement preparation, placeholder binding, or predictable command sequencing. When an application shifts from extended to simple protocol, edge cases around multi-statement execution, logging, and SQL parsing may surface.

That is especially important in systems that mix framework-generated SQL with hand-written statements, because query mode can change how those statements are interpreted by the database and the driver. Teams should treat it as a behavioural setting that can affect application stability, not just a performance knob.

How to Think About It in Practice

Use PreferQueryMode deliberately, with a clear reason such as driver compatibility, protocol behaviour, or a specific database interaction pattern. If you need the predictability of structured parameter handling, keep the extended query protocol unless you have verified that simple protocol still preserves the behaviour your application depends on.

When this option is changed, review the affected database paths for differences in statement execution, multi-command handling, and assumptions about prepared-query semantics. The safest approach is to validate the exact code paths that use the connection setting rather than assuming the change is neutral.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, CIS Controls v8 and OWASP ASVS set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5SC-10 — Network DisconnectDefines controls for limiting and structuring data exchange channels between systems.
Recommendation — Validate connection settings so query traffic uses the expected protocol behaviour for the application.
CIS Controls v8CIS-4 — Secure Configuration of Enterprise Assets and SoftwareApplies to database and application configuration choices that affect secure runtime behaviour.
Recommendation — Review database driver settings and confirm they preserve the intended execution and parsing model.
OWASP ASVSV8 — AuthorizationPrepared-query behaviour can affect how safely inputs are separated from SQL execution.
Recommendation — Verify that query handling still enforces the application's intended separation of code and data.
