Python Class

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated November 3, 2026 Domain: Foundations & NHI Taxonomy

Python class is a blueprint for creating objects in the Python programming language. It defines attributes and methods, and instances created from the class carry their own state while sharing the class behaviour, which makes it the main structure for object-oriented code.

What a Python class represents

A Python class is the blueprint that defines how objects are structured and how they behave. It bundles data and behaviour into one construct, so the class describes the shared rules while each instance holds its own values. That separation is what makes classes the core building block for object-oriented Python.

Classes are most useful when a program needs repeated objects with the same shape but different state. A class can describe a customer, a task, a device, or any other domain entity, and then create many instances without duplicating the behaviour each time.

Attributes, methods, and instances

The main parts of a class are attributes and methods. Attributes store state, while methods define actions or transformations that operate on that state. Instance attributes belong to one object, whereas class attributes are shared across all instances unless a specific object overrides them.

That distinction matters because a class can carry both shared behaviour and per-object data. In practice, the class acts as the template, the instance is the concrete object created from it, and method calls are how code uses the object’s behaviour in a controlled way.

Why classes matter in Python design

Classes help organise code around responsibilities instead of loose functions and variables. They can make programs easier to reason about by grouping related data and operations, especially when a problem domain has clear entities and lifecycle steps.

They also support reuse and extension. A base class can define common behaviour, while subclasses can specialise that behaviour for narrower cases. Used well, this reduces duplication and makes changing the program’s structure easier than scattering the same logic across many unrelated functions.

Common pitfalls and usage boundaries

Python classes are powerful, but they are not always the best abstraction. Small scripts or simple data transformations may be clearer with functions, lightweight records, or plain data structures. Overusing inheritance can also make code harder to follow than composition or simple delegation.

Another practical boundary is that a class only improves design when its responsibilities stay coherent. If a class starts managing unrelated concerns, the abstraction becomes harder to test, reuse, and maintain. A good class usually has a narrow purpose and a clear interface.

Risk and Threat Considerations

Python classes become a security concern when they are used to load, transform, or represent data from untrusted sources. Unsafe object construction, dynamic attribute access, or insecure deserialisation can let attacker-controlled data influence program behaviour in ways the author did not intend.

Failure mechanism: If a program treats class-based object loading as trusted, attacker-controlled inputs can trigger unexpected method calls, object injection, or state changes during deserialisation or object creation.

Impact: The result can be code execution, privilege abuse inside the application, data tampering, or credential exposure, especially when classes encapsulate security-sensitive logic or secrets.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

OWASP ASVS, NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, CIS Controls v8 and SLSA set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
OWASP ASVSV15 — Secure Coding and ArchitecturePython classes shape code structure and trust boundaries in application logic.
Recommendation — Apply V15 design principles to keep class responsibilities narrow and avoid unsafe object construction paths.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5SI-10 — Information Input ValidationClass methods often process external input that must be validated before influencing state.
Recommendation — Validate input before it reaches class methods that change application state.
CIS Controls v8CIS-16 — Application Software SecurityClasses are a core application code construct that should be reviewed for unsafe patterns.
Recommendation — Review class-based code paths for insecure deserialisation and dangerous dynamic behaviour.
SLSASupply-chain Levels for Software ArtifactsPython class code often enters via packages and dependencies whose integrity affects runtime behaviour.
Recommendation — Verify dependency provenance before importing class implementations from third-party packages.

Practitioner Guidance

Why practitioners should care: In production code, a class is not just a neat organisational tool, it is a trust boundary when it processes external input or holds sensitive state. Review class constructors, magic methods, and any deserialisation path with the same care you would apply to other input-handling code.

Common misunderstanding: Many developers assume class-based code is safe because it is "structured" or "object-oriented". Structure does not create safety on its own, especially when a class can be instantiated from data that came from a file, network request, queue, or plugin interface.

Practitioner takeaway: Keep class behaviour explicit, avoid insecure automatic object loading, and treat any path that turns data into objects as security-relevant until proven otherwise.
