SAP HANA

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 29, 2026 Domain: Architecture & Implementation

SAP HANA is an in-memory database platform used to store and process large volumes of structured data for enterprise applications. It combines database storage, analytics and application services in one system, so access control, backup, patching and database privileges are central to its administration.

SAP HANA as an enterprise data platform

SAP HANA is not just a database engine, it is an in-memory platform that also handles analytics and application services. That combination makes it attractive for high-volume enterprise workloads, but it also means administrators have to think about data storage, runtime services and privileged access together rather than as separate layers.

Because the platform often sits close to core business processes, small configuration mistakes can have outsized effects. In practice, SAP HANA security is less about a single control and more about maintaining a trustworthy operating environment around a system that is both data store and execution platform.

Access control and privilege model

Access control is central to SAP HANA because the platform exposes powerful administrative and data-access capabilities. The core question is not simply whether a user can connect, but whether that user should be able to read, change, administer or extend the system in the first place.

That makes privilege design, role assignment and separation of duties important parts of the platform model. If database privileges are too broad, the risk is not only unauthorized data access, but also unintended administrative actions, insecure application behaviour and difficult-to-audit emergency access paths.

For readers mapping SAP governance to a broader identity control model, the SAP Identity and Access Security Guide is the most direct companion for understanding authorisation objects, role design and emergency access patterns.

Backup, recovery and operational resilience

For a system like SAP HANA, backup is part of security as much as it is part of availability. A backup strategy has to preserve not only data integrity, but also the ability to restore a consistent application state after corruption, failure, operator error or malicious change.

Resilience also depends on knowing what must be protected beyond the primary data volume, including configuration, logs, keys, accounts and application dependencies. If recovery procedures are incomplete or untested, the organisation may find that it has backups but not a usable restoration path when the database matters most.

Patch management, exposure and hardening

Because SAP HANA is typically used in enterprise environments with valuable transactional and analytical data, patching and hardening are not optional housekeeping tasks. They are part of reducing the attack surface around a system that often carries broad trust from upstream applications and downstream users.

Exposure grows when the platform is reachable from too many networks, when administrative interfaces are loosely governed, or when supporting components are left in inconsistent states. Organisations should treat vendor guidance, platform configuration baselines and privilege review as part of the same operational discipline, because a secure database is not only about the engine itself, it is about the access paths around it.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 and CIS Controls v8 set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5AC-6 — Least PrivilegeSAP HANA privilege design directly concerns least-privilege access to data and administration.
IA-5 — Authenticator ManagementHANA access depends on credentials and their lifecycle, including rotation and protection.
CP-9 — System BackupHANA backup and restore are central to preserving data and service recovery after failure or compromise.
Recommendation — Restrict HANA users and admins to the minimum privileges needed for their role. Manage HANA credentials with controlled issuance, rotation and revocation. Define and test HANA backups so recovery remains reliable after disruption.
CIS Controls v8CIS-6 — Access Control ManagementHANA administration hinges on controlling who can access data, functions and privileged paths.
CIS-11 — Data RecoveryHANA resilience depends on recoverable backups and validated restoration processes.
Recommendation — Enforce HANA access control reviews and remove unnecessary permissions. Verify HANA recovery procedures and test restoration from backup media.
