Slippage is the difference between the expected price of an asset and the actual execution price after a trade moves the market. It becomes material in thin liquidity pools, where even a moderate order can shift price sharply. In lending systems, unaccounted slippage can cause collateral to be overvalued and positions to become insolvent.

What slippage means in execution and market impact

Slippage is the gap between the price you expect and the price you actually get when a trade executes. In practice, it is a market microstructure problem: order size, order book depth, latency, and volatility all affect how far execution drifts from the quoted level.

For practitioners, the important point is that slippage is not always a sign of failure. In fast or thin markets, some slippage is normal and often unavoidable. What matters is whether the observed movement is consistent with market conditions or whether it signals poor routing, weak liquidity, or avoidable execution error.

Why slippage becomes material in thin liquidity venues

Slippage grows when available liquidity is shallow, because even a moderate order can move price before the full order fills.
