Span Type

A span type is a classification label used to describe what kind of operation a telemetry span represents, such as an LLM call, tool action, retriever step, or evaluator. Stable span typing makes traces easier to analyse consistently across different AI frameworks and agent workflows.

What Span Type Means in Telemetry

Span type is the label that says what kind of operation a span represents, such as a model invocation, a tool action, a retrieval step, or an evaluation step. It gives traces a shared vocabulary so events can be grouped, compared, and understood across different AI frameworks and agent workflows.

Why Span Typing Matters for Traces

Without stable span typing, the same logical operation can appear under different names or structures depending on the framework that emitted it. That makes cross-run analysis noisy, weakens comparisons between applications, and complicates root-cause analysis when a workflow mixes model calls, tool execution, and supporting steps.

Well-chosen span types also help separate the core application path from supporting activity. A span type for retrieval, for example, lets analysts see whether latency came from the model, the search step, or the orchestration layer, rather than flattening everything into a single generic event.

Common Span Type Categories

In AI observability, span types usually describe the role a step plays in the workflow rather than the low-level transport or implementation detail. Common categories include model calls, tool invocations, retriever operations, router or planner steps, memory access, and evaluator spans used for scoring or validation.

The exact set is not universal. Different observability libraries and agent frameworks may use different names, but the goal is the same: make traces readable in a consistent way so the operational meaning of each span is obvious.

A useful span type scheme is one that is stable enough for dashboards and queries, yet specific enough to preserve the difference between an inference call, a function execution, and a post-run evaluation.

How Span Type Improves Analysis and Governance

Span type is most valuable when teams need to answer practical questions about performance, reliability, and behaviour across a chain of AI actions. It makes it easier to filter traces, measure how much time is spent in each stage, and detect when one category of operation behaves differently from the rest.

It also supports governance over agent workflows by making the structure of activity visible. For example, if a workflow unexpectedly produces too many tool spans or repeated evaluator spans, the span typing gives reviewers a clear signal that the system is looping, over-calling tools, or spending effort in the wrong place.

For observability to remain useful, the typing scheme should be applied consistently across services and releases. If teams rename types casually or overload a type with multiple meanings, the trace data becomes harder to search, aggregate, and trust.
