Split APK is an Android application packaging format that divides one app into a base package and separate split packages. Android installs the pieces together, using device-specific splits for screen density, language or architecture so the app can be delivered and updated more selectively.
What Split APK Means for Android Packaging
Split APK is a packaging strategy, not a separate app type. It lets developers divide an Android app into a base package plus optional splits so the device receives only the code and resources it needs.
That structure matters because the installed result is assembled at runtime or install time from multiple files, so security review has to consider the full bundle, not just the base APK. A partial view can miss code paths, permissions, or resources delivered in a split.
Why Split APKs Exist
The main benefit is efficiency. Language packs, screen-density assets, and architecture-specific binaries can be shipped separately, which reduces download size and avoids forcing every device to carry every variant.
This also improves update flexibility. A vendor can replace one component without repackaging the entire application, but that convenience raises the importance of package provenance and integrity checks across all delivered pieces.
Security and Integrity Implications
Split APKs widen the trust boundary of mobile app delivery because the app is no longer a single static artifact. Integrity depends on the installer, the app store or distribution channel, and the device’s ability to combine the right splits without tampering or substitution.
From a defensive perspective, that means developers and security teams should think about manifest consistency, shared signing trust, and whether every split is expected for the target device profile. A malformed or malicious split can alter behaviour even when the base package appears legitimate.
When organisations review Android app risk, they should treat the packaging model as part of the attack surface, especially for sideloaded apps, third-party distribution, or environments that allow unvetted package sources.
How Split APKs Affect Review and Troubleshooting
Split APKs complicate analysis because static inspection of one file may not reveal the whole application. Security testing, reverse engineering, and incident triage often need the complete set of delivered splits to reconstruct the installed app accurately.
That matters for both defenders and developers. Missing splits can cause false conclusions about permissions, exported components, libraries, or resource strings, while post-install compromise review may need to compare the installed package set against the expected release bundle.
Risk and Threat Considerations
Split APKs create a broader supply-chain and installation trust problem than a single monolithic APK. If one split is replaced, injected, or sourced from an untrusted channel, the device may assemble a compromised app that still looks valid at the base-package level.
Failure mechanism: Attackers can abuse the fact that the app is composed from multiple installable pieces, then target distribution, sideloading, or package assembly to introduce unwanted code, alter resources, or subvert expected app behaviour.
Impact: The result can be application tampering, persistence of malicious functionality, user-data exposure, or analyst confusion during incident review because the installed app does not match the assumed package contents.
Standards & Framework Alignment
This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.
OWASP ASVS, SLSA and CIS Controls v8 set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.
| Framework | Control / Reference | Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| OWASP ASVS | V13 — Configuration | Split APKs require validating package composition and deployment configuration. |
| Recommendation — Verify package composition and deployment settings so all app components are expected and consistent. | ||
| SLSA | Supply chain integrity | Split APK delivery depends on provenance and integrity of the distributed artifact set. |
| Recommendation — Track artifact provenance and verify integrity for every delivered app package and split. | ||
| CIS Controls v8 | CIS-16 — Application Software Security | Split APKs are an application delivery model that benefits from secure build and release controls. |
| Recommendation — Apply secure software release controls to ensure distributed app components are signed and verified. | ||
