Universal Links

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 28, 2026 Domain: Architecture & Implementation

Universal Links are a mobile app deep-linking mechanism that opens a specific app screen from a web link when the device trusts the app domain. They rely on domain association files and installed app entitlements, which prevents arbitrary apps from claiming the same link and reduces phishing through lookalike redirects.

Universal Links are a trust-based handoff between the web and a native app. The operating system only routes the user into the app when the domain association is verified, which makes the link behave like a secure, claimed app entry point rather than a generic redirect.

That trust model matters because the same visible URL can mean very different things depending on whether the device can validate the app-domain relationship. If the association is missing, broken, or misconfigured, the link falls back to web behavior instead of opening the app screen the user expected.

The security value of Universal Links is that they narrow the pool of apps that can claim a link domain. That blocks the common weakness of custom schemes, where another app can register the same scheme and intercept traffic or impersonate the intended destination.

The mechanism also helps reduce phishing through lookalike redirects, because the app is not opened simply by matching a URL pattern. The link must belong to a trusted domain association that the device and app can verify, which raises the bar for attacker-controlled app takeover.

For mobile journeys that carry authentication or sensitive account actions, that extra verification is a real control boundary. NHIMG’s OAuth for Native and Mobile Apps Guide covers why claimed HTTPS redirects and browser-based auth flows are safer than embedded or ambiguous link handling.

Domain Association Files and App Entitlements

Universal Links depend on two sides of trust. The website publishes an association file, and the app declares the entitlement that says it is permitted to handle that domain. Both sides must align, or the platform will not treat the link as a verified deep link.

That design shifts control away from ad hoc client-side matching and toward explicit ownership of the domain and the app. It is also why Universal Links are usually discussed alongside app links, claimed HTTPS redirects, and mobile deep-link security controls rather than as a simple UX feature.

NHIMG’s Swift and iOS Secure Coding Guide is a useful companion here because it covers universal links, Apple app site association, and other iOS trust-handling details in one place.

Universal Links matter most in flows where the app must receive a user into a specific trusted context, such as account recovery, magic links, onboarding, or post-authentication navigation. In those paths, the link mechanism is part of the security boundary, not just a routing convenience.

They also matter when teams need consistent behavior across marketing links, email links, browser links, and in-app navigation. If the association is stale or the entitlement is wrong, users can land in the browser instead of the app, which creates friction and can undermine the trust signal of the journey.

NHIMG’s Mobile Deep Link and App Link Security Guide provides the broader mobile-linking context, including verified App Links, handler validation, and common deep-link abuse patterns.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

OWASP ASVS and NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 set the governance and control requirements practitioners need to meet.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
OWASP ASVSV10 — OAuth and OIDCUniversal Links often carry auth redirects into native apps.
V8 — AuthorizationClaimed app links control which app may receive a trusted URL.
V12 — Secure CommunicationUniversal Links rely on trusted HTTPS domain association and transport integrity.
Recommendation — Use V10 to require verified redirect handling for native app authentication flows. Apply V8 to prevent unauthorized app handling of sensitive link destinations. Enforce V12 to protect link delivery and domain association trust.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5IA-5 — Authenticator ManagementLink-based auth journeys depend on protecting tokens and login material.
AC-3 — Access EnforcementOnly the intended app should be allowed to handle the trusted link flow.
Recommendation — Manage link-delivered credentials and tokens under IA-5 lifecycle controls. Use AC-3 to enforce which app context may receive protected navigation.
