Validity Bitmap

← Back to Glossary
By NHI Mgmt Group Updated October 28, 2026 Domain: Foundations & NHI Taxonomy

A validity bitmap is a compact bit array that marks which values in a data column are valid and which are null. In columnar data formats, one bit per entry lets systems represent missing values efficiently without storing a separate flag for each row.

What the validity bitmap represents

A validity bitmap is the compact null-tracking layer for a columnar array. Each position maps to one row or value, with a set bit indicating a valid entry and a cleared bit indicating null, so the column can preserve missingness without a separate per-row flag.

That design matters because the bitmap is part of the column's physical representation, not just a metadata hint. Readers and writers must interpret it consistently with the value buffer, or a column may appear populated when some entries are actually absent.

Why columnar systems use it

The bitmap exists to make null handling cheap at scale. A single bit per row is far smaller than storing a byte or wider flag for every value, and it supports dense scanning, vectorised execution, and compact storage layouts used by analytics engines.

It also keeps null semantics close to the data. That helps systems preserve missing values through filtering, projection, joins, and serialization without expanding the column into a row-oriented structure or duplicating state in multiple places.

How it behaves in practice

In many formats, a validity bitmap is optional when a column contains no nulls, because all values can be treated as valid by default. When nulls do exist, the bitmap becomes the authoritative validity signal for the column's entries, while the value buffer still holds the underlying data slots.

Implementations vary slightly across file formats and memory models, but the core idea is stable: one bit per entry, with bit ordering and null conventions defined by the format or library. That makes the bitmap a low-level interoperability detail that data engines must get exactly right.

Why it matters for data integrity and performance

A validity bitmap is small, but errors around it can be costly. If the bitmap is misread, misaligned, or dropped during conversion, downstream systems may treat nulls as real values, filter them incorrectly, or produce inconsistent query results. The same is true if a writer and reader disagree on whether the bitmap is present or how bits are ordered.

From a performance perspective, the bitmap enables compact storage and efficient null checks, but it also adds a dependency that must stay synchronized with the values column. That makes it a correctness concern for serialization, deserialization, and zero-copy data exchange as much as a storage optimisation.

Standards & Framework Alignment

This section maps relevant standards and security frameworks to the operational risks and controls described in this guidance.

NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 and CIS Controls v8 set the technical controls, while ISO/IEC 27001:2022 defines the regulatory obligations.

FrameworkControl / ReferenceRelevance
NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5SI-10 — Information Input ValidationValidity bitmaps help preserve correct data-state interpretation in storage and processing.
Recommendation — Validate column-state assumptions so null markers are interpreted consistently across data pipelines.
ISO/IEC 27001:2022A.8.13 — Information BackupColumnar data structures depend on accurate stored representations and recoverable data handling.
Recommendation — Protect stored data representations so integrity is preserved during movement and recovery.
CIS Controls v8CIS-3 — Data ProtectionValidity bitmaps are part of compact data representation that must be preserved to maintain data integrity.
