A version tag is a human-readable label that identifies a release, such as v1 or v2.1. In GitHub Actions, tags are convenient but mutable if the maintainer retargets them, so they are less trustworthy than commit SHAs when the workflow must resist tampering or unexpected code changes.

A version tag is a release label that helps people and automation refer to a specific build, release, or point in time. In software delivery, the key boundary is whether the tag is merely a pointer, or a trusted release marker that must remain stable after publication.

That distinction matters because tags are often convenient for humans, but convenience can hide mutability. A tag can be retargeted to a different commit if repository controls allow it, which means the same label may no longer identify the same code. In security-sensitive pipelines, that makes the tag a weaker reference than an immutable commit SHA, even when both appear to name “the release.”

The common misunderstanding is to treat all release labels as equivalent. In practice, a version tag is only trustworthy to the extent that the repository policy, review process, and release workflow prevent silent reassignment. If the environment requires repeatable builds, provenance checks, or tamper resistance, the tag should be understood as a convenience layer, not the source of truth.

Release managers, platform teams, and repository administrators should know whether tags are protected, who can retarget them, and whether a release process validates the tagged commit before promotion. If those controls are vague, the tag becomes a naming convention rather than a governance control.

For teams managing software supply-chain integrity, the safest mental model is simple: readable labels help people coordinate, but immutable identifiers prove what was actually shipped.
