TL;DR: Guardian agents supervise other AI agents at runtime, validating actions against policy and blocking unsafe or noncompliant behaviour as enterprises move from text generation to agents that can call APIs, update records, and trigger workflows, according to Lumia Security. Access control alone no longer answers what an agent is about to do, so governance has to move to action-level oversight.

Editorial analysis by NHI Mgmt Group, based on content published by Lumia Security: “What Is a Guardian Agent in Modern Enterprises?”.

By the numbers:

  • 62% of respondents said their organizations were at least experimenting with AI agents.

Key questions

Q: What breaks when AI agents are governed only with login-based IAM?

A: Login-based IAM breaks because it stops at authentication and never evaluates the thousands of actions an autonomous agent may take after sign-in.

Q: Why do guardian controls matter when agents can use approved permissions in the wrong way?

A: Because the risk is no longer limited to unauthorised access.

Q: How do security teams know if agent observability is actually working?

A: Observability is working only when teams can tie together token activity, tool calls, and latency for a specific agent session.

Practitioner guidance

  • Inventory every active AI agent Document each agent's owner, purpose, connected systems, tools, permissions, data access, memory, and approval points before expanding autonomy further.
  • Classify agent actions by consequence Separate low-impact actions such as summarisation from consequential actions such as external messaging, data changes, code execution, and payments.
  • Write policies at the action level Define which records, fields, tools, recipients, and workflows each agent can use, and specify which actions require approval or escalation.

Bottom line: Autonomous agents create governance risk at the action layer, not only at the access layer.
