Banks and financial institutions are increasingly using generative AI to analyse documents, summarise reports, support customer service, and automate internal workflows. However, using AI with confidential financial information creates an important challenge: how can institutions improve productivity without exposing customer data?

Consider an employee who uploads a customer statement or loan application to an external AI assistant. The document might contain account details, personal information, income records, or other confidential data. Without appropriate safeguards, this information could be processed or retained in ways the organisation has not fully assessed.

One practical approach is to identify sensitive information before it enters an AI workflow, apply redaction or anonymisation where appropriate, and restrict access to approved AI services. Financial institutions should also review data retention policies, third-party processing arrangements, access permissions, and monitoring controls.

However, security measures must work without making everyday tasks unnecessarily complicated. Automated redaction can miss sensitive details, while excessive masking may reduce the context an AI model needs to produce useful results.

For banking and cybersecurity professionals, what has worked best in practice? Do you rely on private AI deployments, automated data protection, approved enterprise platforms, or a combination of these methods?

What safeguards would you consider essential before allowing generative AI to process confidential customer information?
