TL;DR: P0 Security says privileged access is moving beyond authentication into continuous authorization across cloud services, workloads, non-human identities and agentic systems, while many teams still rely on tooling built for static servers and predictable access paths. The governing problem is deciding what each identity can do at the moment access is needed, not proving who it is.

Editorial analysis by NHI Mgmt Group, based on content published by P0 Security: “When Neha and Kelsey said the quiet part out loud about privileged access”.

Key questions

Q: What breaks when privileged access controls are still built for static servers?

A: Static-server PAM assumes predictable access paths, durable sessions and stable privilege boundaries.

Q: Why does privileged access now depend more on authorization than authentication?

A: Because most environments already know who or what is requesting access.

Q: How do you know whether privileged access governance is actually working?

A: Look for reduced standing assignments, shorter activation periods aligned to task duration, and access reviews that routinely remove unused eligibility.

Practitioner guidance

  • Audit standing privilege across identity types Identify where human admins, service accounts, workloads and agents still hold persistent rights that exceed their task scope.
  • Unify entitlement, credential and session context Bring discovery, shared credential management, policy enforcement and session oversight into a single governance view so the same identity is not judged by four different tools with no shared state.
  • Move privileged decisions to request time Replace durable permission assumptions with context-aware authorization rules that evaluate task, environment and identity type at the moment access is needed.

Bottom line: Privileged access governance is shifting from identity proofing to runtime authorization across cloud, workload and agent-driven environments.

What's in the full article

P0 Security's full article covers the operational detail this post intentionally leaves for the source:

  • How the vendor frames the shift from authentication to authorization in customer implementations
  • The practical limits of vaults, bastions and other legacy privileged access patterns in modern cloud estates
  • Why fragmented entitlement discovery and session tracking create blind spots across identity types
  • The vendor's own view of how zero standing privilege maps to current customer demand

Privileged access governance is moving from proving identity to constraining action. The article’s central point is that authentication is no longer the main bottleneck. What matters now is whether a human, workload or agent is authorised for the exact operation it is about to perform. That shifts PAM from a gatekeeping model to a continuous decision model, which is where many legacy programmes are structurally weak.

A few things that frame the scale:

  • 97% of NHIs carry excessive privileges, increasing unauthorised access and broadening the attack surface, according to the Ultimate Guide to NHIs.

A question worth separating out:

Q: How should teams govern privileged access across humans, workloads, and agents?

A: Teams should govern privileged access through one access lifecycle, not separate controls for each identity type. That means aligning discovery, approval, session control, and revocation so humans, workloads, and agents all follow the same authority model. If privilege cannot be traced end to end, teams do not have governance, only partial visibility.
